Apple released OS 5.1 yesterday, which contains improvements and bug fixes.

2821 Apple releases iOS 5.1

An overview from Apple:

  • Japanese language support for Siri (availability may be limited during initial rollout)
  • Photos can now be deleted from Photo Stream
  • Camera shortcut now always visible on Lock Screen for iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone * 3GS and iPod touch (4th generation)
  • Camera face detection now highlights all detected faces
  • Redesigned Camera app for iPad
  • Genius Mixes and Genius playlists for iTunes Match subscribers
  • Audio for TV shows and movies on iPad optimised to sound louder and clearer
  • Podcast controls for playback speed and a 30 second rewind for iPad
  • Addresses bugs affecting battery life
  • Fixes an issue that occasionally caused audio to drop for outgoing calls.

For me the last 2 points are important. On my iPhone 4S battery life has been quite poor and I’ve had to charge it every night but after the 5.1 update I can charge it every other night.

One way speech on calls had been a problem also affecting nearly every call I made but after the update I’ve not had one call with one way audio.

For me, iOS 5.1 has been well worth the update.

QNAP has officially announced a new NAS series that it previewed at January’s CES show in Las Vegas.

The new TS-x69 Pro series will be available in 2, 4, 5, 6, and 8-drive versions. All are based on a dual-core 2.13 GHz Intel Atom D2700 “Cedar Trail” CPU, with 1 GB of DDR3 RAM and support hot-swappable 2.5 and 3.5″ SATA drives.

Other hardware features include dual Gigabit Ethernet ports supporting aggregation and failover and USB 2.0, USB 3.0 and eSATA ports for storage expansion. An HDMI port is also included for HD video playback support, but won’t be active until a future firmware update.

The new series will run QNAP’s latest V3.6 firmware with features including VPN Server (OpenVPN and PPTP), LDAP Server, Squid Proxy Server, browser-based music and photo sharing and enhanced backup.

The new features are in addition to QNAP’s extensive base feature set that includes multiple volume support with optional encryption, iSCSI support and support for VMware, Citrix XenServer and Windows Hyper-V virtualisation.

Shipments of 4, 5 6, and 8 bay models will start in “early April” but availability is not known for the two-bay TS-269 Pro.

Synology have released Version 4.0 of Disk Station Manager for their wide range of Network Attached Storage devices.

DSM 4.0 is compatible with all current models of Disk Station but some features may not work due to hardware specification.

As well as a new look and feel, widgets have been introduced to give a snapshot of device performance. Packages such as Download Station, Photo Station and Audio Station have been upgraded to Version 5.

Surveillance Station now supports over 1000 cameras.

Your Synology NAS can now act as a DHCP server. The higher end models have very powerful hardware – considerably more powerful than most routers so this is a welcome feature.

A VPN client has also been introduced for secure file access across the Internet.

To keep your data safe Synology have introduced anti-virus for your NAS. This is available to download from the new Package Centre.

NTFS performance is significantly improved.

Apple devices such as Airport Express, Airport Extreme and Time Capsule are now supported.

The full range of Synology NAS devices is available from ICS Technologies.
